Time Well Spent

How Our Leisure Activities Made Us Who We Are

The practice of listening to music purely for enjoyment, separate from ritual or storytelling, emerged relatively recently in history. While spontaneous performances and music in homes, churches, and theatres have long traditions, Western cultures generally don’t centre daily life around music-making.  Instead, listening has become the primary form of musical engagement. Popular music now serves multiple functions in everyday life, intersecting with sports, media, art, politics, lifestyle, and identity formation.

From radio alarms to workplace listening through personal devices and desktop computers, music permeates daily routines. It shapes urban nightlife through restaurants, bars, and dance clubs, while also enhancing experiences in cinemas, fun fairs, shopping centres, and fast-food establishments. Musical preferences and activities vary based on economic circumstances, age, and personal inclinations, with music playing vital roles in the arts, commerce, and advertising while contributing significantly to local and national economies.
