MUSIC – Earl Streeter

Earl Streeter

In 1927, three years after the Fraser Valley’s first radio station, Earl Streeter, the “general all-around garage operator,” established his “Radio Programme Station CJCU” from Osbourn’s Ice Cream Parlour on First Avenue between Welton Street and Horne Street in Mission. Streeter assembled a collection of music records from Mission residents and welcomed children’s choirs to perform on his station, which operated using a transmitter salvaged from a WW1 submarine. His broadcasting venture continued for several months until the equipment was purchased and relocated to Chilliwack. Streeter’s commitment to bringing music to his community demonstrates how music has consistently been a vital element to the people of Mission and Fraser Valley.
