Using and Preserving Your Keepsakes

Follow along weekly for practical tips and advice from museum staff adapted for home use!

Why do we collect and preserve objects? In a museum we collect for the same reasons that you might collect heirlooms or other sentimental items in the home. Keepsakes trigger memories, stories, or remind us of a specific place or time.

We don’t always keep valuable items stored away, as they may be repurposed and utilized by new generations. A wedding dress worn by multiple generations of women, for example, has new memories and meanings embedded in the garment with each wear. Toys and dolls may be stored away for future children or grandchildren to discover and enjoy.

This video series addresses the different aspects of utilizing your treasured items while taking measures to prevent deterioration and prolong their lifespan.
